WeeksVille was a Historic Free Black Community
Weeksville was one of the largest free Black communities in pre-Civil War America.
It was founded by African American longshoreman James Weeks in 1838 as part of an effort to establish citizenship by owning land. To be eligible to vote in those days, non-white men had to own land and pay taxes on it.
This once vibrant community slowly faded and was forgotten as the city grew. It was only rediscovered in 1968. Four homes were found on Bergen St. They are now known as the Hunterfly Road Houses.
The Weeksville Heritage Center preserves the neighborhood’s history.
[Editor: Always heard about Weeksville, but never realized it’s right in the middle of Brooklyn. There is so much history right under our feet]
Crown Heights rocks!
