Henri Cartier-Bresson (French, 1908-2004) is the father of photojournalism. American master Edward Weston (U.S., 1886-1958) spent four of his early years in Mexico. Modernist Manuel Álvarez Bravo (Mexican, 1902-2002) is the father of Latin American photography. His student Graciela Iturbide is one of the leading living Latin American photographers.
All are masters of light, form, and irony. We excel in particular at the last element, irony, because Latin American life is both terribly and wonderfully ironic.
The Aperture Foundation and International Center of Photography are here. Paris Photo New York (formerly the AIPAD Photography Show) and Photoville are New York City’s big art photography fairs. Throckmorton Fine Art is the leading Latin American photography gallery in the U.S.
