YAGP
YAGP, the Youth America Grand Prix, is one of the world’s largest ballet talent auditions and scholarship programs. Founded in 1999 by former Bolshoi ballerina Larissa Saveliev, the organization produces annual auditions for over 12,000 young dancers, ages 9-19, in 13 countries and 22 cities across the United States.
A good performance can launch a career at one of the world’s leading ballet companies. Over $4.5 million has been awarded in scholarships over the years. Around $500,000 is now awarded every year.
Over 450 alumni are currently dancing in 80 professional companies around the world. Over 100 are soloists or principals. YAGP is a star-making machine, the March Madness of ballet.
The Emerging Choreographer Series falls within the organization’s mission of supporting the next generation of ballet artists. It has featured now famous artists such as Camille A. Brown, Marcelo Gomes, Adam Hougland, Susan Jaffe, Justin Peck, Derek Hough, Juliano Nunes and Melanie Hamrick.
The YAGP is the only major dance competition to carry on during the pandemic. Congratulations for figuring out how to put dance on stage safely.
The YAGP Gala
The Gala is a starry, starry night. Stars and ballet masters from around the world converge on New York to scout the next generation and everyone mixes and mingles at the Gala performance. If you know the ballet world, you are likely to be very excited by who is sitting or standing next to you.
New York City is blessed with more than its fair share of legendary ballet companies, but the YAGP Gala is our favorite ballet show in New York. The young dancers are super talented. Auditions are based on standard repertoire from famous ballets. The dancers know the repertoire and so does the audience. They feed off of each other’s excitement in a way you won’t see at any other ballet performance.
