Summer Solstice and Midsummer
The Summer solstice is the longest day of the year. It falls on June 20, 21 or 22. Parisians celebrate the shortest night with the Fête de la Musique, an all night street party with live bands all over Paris. SummerStage sometimes hosts French bands on midsummer.
Midsummer is an old European tradition. June 24 is the traditional date, although it’s sometimes celebrated on the closest weekend. In that case, Friday night is Midsummer Eve and Saturday is Midsummer Day. William Shakespeare immortalized the day with his play “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” (1595 or 96). New York City Ballet dances George Balanchine’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” (1962) around midsummer.
