New York City Opera was founded at New York City Center in 1943. Legendary New York Mayor Fiorello La Guardia called it “the people’s opera” because like New York City Center, its mission was to present culture at a reasonable price. New Yorkers used to line up in the streets for opera. The Company helped launch the careers of many famous opera stars.
The Company moved to Lincoln Center in 1966. In 2011 it moved downtown. The company closed in 2013, but was resurrected in 2016 and continues to entertain New Yorkers. It’s a small company now, but that gives it the freedom to do some really unique opera.
