Film Festivals are a filtering process for the year’s best independent films. The Film Festival Calendar is a buildup to important dates for the Academy Awards which recognize films released in the prior calendar year.

The “Big Three” international film festivals are Cannes, Venice, and Berlin.

The big North American film festival is Toronto (TIFF).

New York City’s big film festivals are the New York Film Festival and Tribeca Film Festival. Film Society of Lincoln Center and the Museum of Modern Art host a number of film festivals throughout the year.

New York City’s main Latin film festivals include Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Neighboring Scenes (Latin American Cinema), Rendez-Vous with French Cinema, and Open Roads: New Italian Cinema.

New York City’s Hispanic film festivals include the Cinema Tropical Film Festival,  the Havana Film Festival New York, and Colombian, Dominican, and Puerto Rican international film festivals.
