Salsa Colombiana
Salsa is a blend of many Latin cultures that came together in 1970s New York City, and Colombian salsa is one of its main currents.
Colombians are so musical, that to become a Colombian professional musician, you have to be extremely good.
Salsa Caleña
Cali, Colombia is “La capital de la salsa.” It is cultural there. Most everyone dances and dances well. Dancing with a Caleño or Caleña feels great like floating in the warm Caribbean Sea. If someone from Cali is at a party, everyone wants to dance with them.
Cali has a stage form of salsa show that also exists in other places, but is probably strongest in Cali.
Caribbean salsa dances six steps on eight beats. But Colombian salsa steps on all eight beats. It looks like martial arts in the feet.
In New York City, salsa is a club dance, but in its natural habitat, it’s a social glue that brings together Latin communities. We get together to eat, drink, sing and dance. We catch up on gossip. Maybe we buy or sell things. Sometimes we dance with people to see who is going to give us a good night, or a great lifetime.
