Frieze New York is the City’s big spring contemporary art fair. Several art fairs normally cluster around “Frieze Week.” This COVID season, there is only one other fair. But it’s great that we’re starting to recover our balance.

A Slimmer Format

The Fair normally exhibits around 200 galleries. This year, there are 66 galleries and the fair moved to The Shed in Hudson Yards. Moving to The Shed solves the problem of lines on the usual ferry ride to Randall’s Island. It also puts the fair near Chelsea which is one of Manhattan’s main art districts.

The usual exhibition sections have been slimmed down to just the main gallery section and the Frame section of single-artist presentations by younger galleries.
