Latin Parades in NYC are an excuse to gather as a community and teach our children about their heritage. Everyone loves a parade.
They are basically American-style carnival marches or comparsas. Most Latin parades are around the independence days of their heritage countries.
The National Puerto Rican Day Parade is America’s biggest cultural celebration.

Latin Parades in New York City
Parades originated as religious and military processions. Latin parades are influenced by Carnival, patron saint festivals, New Orleans funeral processions, and Cuban Guaracha musical theatre traditions which would carry on into the streets
Guaracha was a naughty Cuban theater tradition that was often performed in bars. Think conga line. In Puerto Rico, guaracha evolved into the Parranda Christmas caroling tradition. Today the word means to have a wild party.
Many Latin parades end at a street fair.
Fifth Avenue and Lower Broadway are among the world’s most famous parade locations. In Manhattan, parades also march on Sixth Avenue, Madison Avenue and Central Park West.
