Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks are the stars of New York City’s U.S. Independence Day celebrations.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement, Macy’s reimagines this year’s display as a series of unannounced popups in every New York City borough. The fireworks started Monday, June 29. Thank you Macy’s for your spirit of inclusion.
In other years, fireworks may be launched from:
- The East River between Manhattan and Brooklyn
- New York Harbor with the Statue of Liberty
- The Hudson River between Manhattan and New Jersey

Fireworks are Chinese Invention
Modern fireworks were developed in China during the Song Dynasty (960-1279). They are used in festivals to chase away bad energy and bring good luck. Thank you China.
