“Marry Me” is a 2022 romantic comedy directed by Kat Coiro. It stars Jennifer Lopez, Maluma and Owen Wilson.
Lopez plays a Pop star who while backstage, preparing to marry her partner (Maluma) in a live performance of their hit song “Marry Me,” learns he is having an affair with her assistant.
Meanwhile Owen Wilson, who was reluctantly brought to the show by a friend with an extra ticket, is in the audience holding a “Marry Me” sign. He has no clue what is going on.
In a moment of blazing Latina fury (full cantaleta), Lopez calls the guy with the “Marry Me” sign up on stage and marries him right then and there on live television.
It’s Good to Laugh at Ourselves
After the marriage the fun begins because the couple has to figure out what to do now. Was it a silly moment or destiny? What do you do when you wake up married to someone you never met before? How does a regular guy fit into a Pop star’s life?
We don’t know if it’s in the film, but the most dramatic moment would definitely be meeting her parents. They would be furious and very suspicious of their new son-in-law because he is not Latino. Then how do a Latina and an Anglo make a life together from scratch?
Many commentators, Jennifer included, make fun of the fact that she has had a few very public relationships. She says that she drew on her own life experience to make this film.
This is hilarious and right now we all need to laugh at ourselves a little bit. It is the special genius of the mature Jenny From the Block. She brings people together.
It’s also a beautiful New York City movie. The film is produced by Nuyorican Productions, Jennifer’s production company.
[Editor Keith: I too have some experience with multicultural relationships. If her parents are against you, forget it. No matter how good you are, you’ll never be anything but the “gringo” who stole the daughter from the family.
One of the hardest moments is when the parents start accusing their daughter of abandoning her roots and becoming a gringa. All immigrant families go through this.
But I also know that multicultural relationships can be very rewarding. The love between mixed couples is a special one that helps bring all of society together. ¡WEPA!]
