Miss America is a talent competition that started in 1921 as a boardwalk swimsuit parade to promote Atlantic City, New Jersey.
92nd Miss America
The Miss America 2019 finals will be broadcast live on ABC from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey on Sunday, September 9, 2018 at 9 pm.
Miss America 2019 is Nia Franklin. For the talent competition Miss New York 2018 sang from Italian opera La Bohème.
Ms. Franklin’s photo really speaks to the changes in the event from beauty contest to talent competition.
Miss America 2.0
The times are changing and the Miss America Organization, after going through a rough patch in 2017-2018, is changing too.
The swimsuit competition is gone, and candidates can choose something empowering and representative of themselves to wear for the evening gown competition.
The competition is more about the person than just her looks. In fact candidates (no longer contestants) are not supposed to be judged on their looks at all. It’s becoming more of a talent competition for the demanding job of being Miss America for a year.
We hope they figure it out. We are all trying to figure out how to respect individuals for who they are, instead of how they look.
A New Candidness
One of the really refreshing things about Miss America 2.0 is the candidness of the candidates.
Naturally, they put forward the best of themselves, but they are also very frank about some of the bad things that happen in our lives. Some of the candidates talk about sexual abuse, parents in jail and other things that are ugly, but real.
It takes the candidates off the pedestal and grounds them in real life. It makes them human and proves that beauty is more than skin deep.
Latin Contestants at Miss America 2019
Alexandra Coppa, Miss Rhode Island, has an Italian heritage.
Ashley Alyssa Fresquez
Ashley Alyssa Fresquez, Miss New Mexico, is an American from Albuquerque.
We don’t know her heritage, but her last name Fresquez may come from a Belgian settler in New Mexico hundreds of years ago. If so, that might be from the time when Brussels was the capital of the Spanish Netherlands.
Laura Camille Matrazzo
Laura Camille Matrazzo, Miss North Carolina, has an Italian heritage.
Gabriela Taveras, Miss Massachusetts, has a Dominican heritage. She is the first Black Miss Massachusetts.
Best wishes to all the candidates.
