New York City Ballet performs the Balanchine classic Jewels, six times in its Fall 2018 Season at the David H. Koch Theater in Lincoln Center from September 18 – 25, 2018.
Jewels (1967) has a tryptych: Emeralds is set to Gabriel Fauré, Rubies is set to Igor Stravinsky, and Diamonds is set to Tschaikovsky.
Balanchine had worked the concept in his Symphony in C for the Paris Opera in 1947. Visiting the famous jewelers Van Cleef and Arpels on Fifth Avenue, inspired Balanchine to further develop the idea. He created the first three-act ballet without a story.
The lead New York Times dance critic Alastair Macaulay explains the ballet in his 2016 article Understanding Balanchine’s ‘Jewels,’ a Perfect Introduction to Ballet.
