The Macy’s Story
Macy’s is generally considered to be the largest store in the United States. It was founded by Rowland Hussey Macy as a retail dry goods store in Haverhill, Massachusetts in 1851. The store moved to 14th St in 1858 and to its Herald Square flagship location in 1902.
Many U.S. holiday traditions originated in New York City. The store is one of the stars of the popular Christmas movie “Miracle on 34th Street.” Santaland is still one of the best places to visit Santa in New York City during the holidays.
The store is part of the fabric of New York City. It sponsors the Flower Show, Fourth of July Fireworks, Thanksgiving Day Parade and Santaland. The store also does something every year for Hispanic Heritage Month.
