About Repertorio Español
Repertorio Español was founded in 1968 by New York Cubans. It adapts Hispanic literature to the stage, and produces new work.
The cultural taproot is Spanish Golden Age Theater (ca. 1590-1681) when all sectors of Spanish society enjoyed theatre – from monarchs to homeless.
The Gramercy Arts Theater (not the Gramercy Theater) is one of the small black-box theaters that used to be all over New York, especially Downtown. They are disappearing now, so Repertorio is a living connection to the past.
Staging is simple. Productions rely on script, direction, and acting. It is really a playwright’s and actor’s theatre. Many famous writers, actors, and directors pass through.
Repertorio presents during weekdays, too.

Kips Bay is a mixed-use neighborhood with hospitals and East River waterfront. Curry Hill on Lexington between 27th & 29th, is one of NYC’s Little India’s. We like to have dinner there when we go to Repertorio Español.
