Hispanic Theatre Traditions
Repertorio Español was founded in 1968 by New York Cubans. It produces new works and brings a lot of great Hispanic literature to the stage. The company combines respect for Hispanic traditions (Cuba was Spain after all) with a Caribbean sensitivity that is very New York City.
Productions range from Spanish Golden Age classics, to newly commissioned adaptations of contemporary Latin literature. There is something for the entire family from young people to abuelitos. Shows are in Spanish. Many offer English supertitles.
The Gramercy Arts Theater (not the Gramercy Theater) is a small black-box theater of the kind that used to be all over New York City, especially in Downtown, Manhattan. They are disappearing now, so Repertorio Español is a living connection to the past.
Productions are sparsely staged. They rely on script and acting. This is really a playwright’s and actor’s theatre. Some famous writers and actors pass through.
Repertorio’s taproot is Spanish Golden Age Theater (1492 – late 1600s) when all sectors of Spanish society enjoyed theatre – from monarchs to the homeless.
