George Balanchine and America’s first prima ballerina Maria Tallchief (Osage Nation), turned an obscure work called The Nutcracker into the world’s most popular ballet.

New York City Ballet’s legacy includes George Balanchine’s Imperial Ballet and Ballets Russes background, his relationships with legendary ballet composers, and his development of neoclassical ballet which stripped away scenery, costume and story into dancers in leotards and pure movement.
