New York City Ballet is one of the world’s leading Classical Ballet companies. The legacy of founding choreographers George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins blends Ballet, Hollywood and Broadway into something unique in the Ballet world.
City Ballet is known for its Balanchine technique and collaborations with visual artists. Its home theater is the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center. Its ballet school is the School of American Ballet at Lincoln Center.
George Balanchine and America’s first prima ballerina Maria Tallchief (Osage Nation), turned an obscure work called The Nutcracker into the world’s most popular ballet. How cool is it that a Native American ballerina popularized “The Nutcracker”!

A Deep Ballet Heritage
City Ballet’s heritage includes George Balanchine’s Imperial Ballet and Ballets Russes background, his relationships with legendary ballet composers, and his development of neoclassical ballet which stripped away scenery, costume and story into dancers in leotards and pure movement.
There is Jerome Robbins and his work on Broadway and film that profoundly captured the many ways that we are Americans of the United States.
The School of American Ballet has a legacy of developing legendary dancers. New York City Ballet carries on the Ballets Russes tradition of creating new work in collaboration with the best contemporary artists in other fields.
In the end, it all comes down to music, choreography and dancers. That is probably exactly what Mr. B had in mind.
