Growing Talent at Home
The Juilliard School’s predecessor, the Institute of Musical Art, was founded in 1905 because performers were going to Europe for an education because the United States did not have any great music schools. The school was originally in Morningside Heights in Upper Manhattan.
In 1920, French American textile merchant Augustus D. Juilliard established the Juilliard Foundation and the Juilliard Graduate School. He has an interesting story in that he was born on a steamship in the Atlantic as his parents emigrated to New York from France.
The Juilliard School was founded in 1926 by merging the Institute of Musical Art and the Juilliard Graduate School. It moved to the Juilliard Building in 1969.
Today, the Juilliard School is one of the world’s preeminent dance, drama and music schools.
