Ballet Hispánico founder Tina Ramirez passed away on September 6, 2022 in the Upper West Side at age 92. The Venezuela-born, New York Puerto Rican Mexican founded the company in 1970 and ran it until 2009. Ramirez was a 2005 winner of the National Medal of Arts, America’s highest cultural honor. We stand on the shoulders of giants like Tina Ramirez. 🇵🇷🇲🇽

Ballet Hispanico presents three new works that explore marginalized communities at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, Friday – Saturday, December 1 – 2, 2017.
- Espiritu Vivo, with Brooklyn-based choreographer Ronald K. Brown, explores the intersection of Black and Latino in the Caribbean and Latin America.
- Bury Me Standing by Spanish choreographer Ramón Oller considers the Roma or “Gypsy” people. Spanish Flamenco is their music.
- In Con Brazos Abiertos, Mexican-American choreographer, Michelle Manzanales explores the Tejano experience of growing up here and being reluctant to embrace your heritage from there.

Ballet Hispánico is One of America’s Leading Latino Dance Companies
The company was founded in 1970 by Mexican Puerto Rican American Tina Ramirez (1928-2022). She was born in Venezuela while traveling with her Mexican bullfighter father. Tina’s vision was to build a company for Latin dancers. The National Medal of Arts winner led her creation until 2009. 🇵🇷🇲🇽🇻🇪
Famous alumni include actors Jennifer Lopez, Nancy Ticotin, and Michael DeLorenzo.
Cuban American Artistic Director Eduardo Vilaro (Luna Negra Dance Theater) carries the legacy. According to Vilaro, Ballet Hispánico’s logo was inspired in part by New York Latin Culture Magazine’s. 🇨🇺
