Three Kings Day
In some families, Three Kings is the gift-giving day and the 3 Kings bring gifts for children. January 6 is one of the Latin world’s most beautiful family days.
It’s also the beginning of Carnival Season when communities begin final preparations for Carnival Tuesday (Mardi Gras), which is March 1 this year.
By Medieval tradition, the three kings of the Orient are: Balthasar king of Arabia or Ethiopia; Melchior, king of Persia; and Gaspar, king of India. Every year, they bring the message that we should respect people from afar because being Latin, they are part of who we are. For example, the Pandereta hand drum of Puerto Rican Plena is an Arab drum that comes to the Americas via Africa. ¡WEPA!
