Thu, May 5 (Cinco de Mayo)
Celebrate Cinco de Mayo, the celebration of Mexican American culture that actually celebrates the Mexican victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. (It’s not Mexican Independence day). 🇲🇽
Cinco de Mayo (May 5) is a festival from Puebla, Mexico that has become the main Mexican American cultural celebration in the United States. It celebrates the Mexican victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862 – NOT Mexican Independence Day which is in September.
After being pushed out of the Americas by the Haitians, the French planned to conquer Mexico and use it as a base to join confederate traitors to the United States in the American Civil War. The unexpected setback cost the French the fighting season and prevented them from joining the American Civil War. If the people of Puebla weren’t so valiant, we might be a very different country today. ¡Viva México! 🇲🇽

N’Dour is known for Senegalese Mbalax music based on Serer sacred puberty rites, but his style of Global Music is a fusion with popular Latin music that came back to Africa. Into his MBalax tradition, N’Dour pours Cuban Rumba, Hip-Hop, Jazz and R&B.

Tributes the Women of Revolutionary Mexico
Ballet Nepantla dances “Valentina,” a Contemporary Ballet about the strength and resilience of women in Revolutionary Mexico, at Symphony Space in the Upper West Side, on Fri, May 27 at 8:30pm. From $20. 🇲🇽
“Valentina” is a collection of stories that speak to the strength and resilience of women during Revolutionary Mexico.
What New York City Ballet’s George Balanchine did with the folkloric dances of his native Russia, Ballet Nepantla is doing with the folkloric dances of Mexico.
Ballet Nepantla’s “Valentina” rewrites the story of what it means to be a Mexican woman.
By fusing contemporary ballet with traditional Mexican folkloric dance, “Valentina” tells stories of wealth and power, hope and despair, struggle and loss, and triumph.
