Italian Heritage Day (formerly Columbus Day) is Monday.
Indigenous Peoples Day is Monday.
Spain’s National Day is Tuesday.
Monday, October 11
Italian Heritage Day / Indigenous Peoples Day ~ Many Latin Americans are furious about the whitewashing of the Indigenous Genocide (that began with a 95% death rate) and enslavement of over 12 million African Peoples and their descendants that Columbus brought after 1492, but Columbus himself was an evil man. His own Spanish sponsors called him back to Spain, jailed him, and stripped him of his power for crimes against Indigenous Peoples.
America’s Italian community attached to Columbus because the US holiday was created to discourage Jim Crow Confederates from lynching Italian Americans (for associating with African Americans). The recognition helped Italian Americans make the transition from “others” to just “Americans.”
If you want to know what we think about Christopher Columbus, read our story.
You can tell us to change the name all you want, but we are just journalists. NYC Department of Education changed the holiday’s name to some outcry. [Thank you.] The Columbus Day Parade is responsible for its own name. The New York State Assembly is responsible for the holiday’s name in New York State. The US Congress is responsible for name in the USA. If you want to change it, talk to your elected representatives.
