The Virgin in her many forms is one of the principal ways that Latin Americans related to the imposed Catholic religion of the colonizers. The men brutalized us so we looked for a softer way to connect with God.

We looked to the Mother of God for comfort and hoped that she could soften the blows we suffered in the name of silver and gold.

Mother is also the center of the Latin family, so it is natural we would turn to her in our need.
