J’Ouvert is a Trinidad Carnival street party that celebrates freedom from slavery. Participants (Jab Jabs) smear paint, mud or oil on themselves and each other, and dance outside to Soca bands until dawn. Basically we get a little dirty before the day’s Pretty Mas parade when we get all pretty and glittery.

J’Ouvert is usually around Flatbush, Empire and Nostrand Avenues.
6 am

NOTE: There has been serious trouble at recent J’Ouvert parties in the middle of the night. Be safe and sane. Wait until 6 am.

New York City is watching our community. Let’s be recognized for our beautiful culture, not violence!
