1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair Shows African and African Diaspora Art

The 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair 2025 is one of the world’s leading contemporary African and Diaspora art fairs.

Mother Afrika and the African Diaspora have always been very creative, but many of us are only recently decolonized enough to see the beauty and value in it. Most people buy art to put in their home, but if you are buying as an investment, there is a lot of untapped talent here.

The Halo

The 11th 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair 2025 presents 30 galleries of contemporary African and Diasporic art with a Caribbean spotlight; at The Halo at 28 Liberty St in Manhattan’s Financial District; during Frieze Week, with a VIP Preview on Thursday, May 8, 2025 for $100, and public hours from Friday-Sunday, May 9-11, 2025. $38. 🇧🇸 🇧🇷 🇨🇩 🇫🇷 🇬🇭 🇭🇰 🇮🇹 🇯🇲 🇯🇵 🇲🇬 🇳🇬 🇿🇦 🇬🇧 🇺🇸

10th 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair 2024

Starrett-Lehigh Building

The 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair 2024 brings over 30 galleries and the work of over 70 African and African Diaspora artists; to the Starrett-Lehigh Building in Chelsea, Manhattan; from Wednesday-Saturday, May 1-4, 2024. 🇺🇸 🇫🇷 🇲🇦 🇳🇬 🇿🇦 🇪🇸 🇺🇬

There are galleries from Belgium, France, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Uganda, United Kingdom, United States. There are installations by Yaw Owusu of Ghana, and Joël Andrianomearisoa of Madagascar, plus a group show of Caribbean artists curated by Atlantic Arthouse.

The Starrett-Lehigh Building is a work of art in itself. Built as a freight terminal and warehouse in 1931, it has giant elevators that can lift an entire tractor trailer rig. It’s modern design was exceptional for its time. Today it’s popular with photographers for its large open floors with great light.

1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair

The Fair was founded by Touria El Glaoui in 2013. The fair is international with editions in London, New York City, and Marrakech.

It’s an important art fair for several reasons.

  1. The future belongs to the young, and Mother Afrika has the world’s youngest population.
  2. As we continue to decolonize, artists of color are getting opportunities that were long denied.
  3. The art world has realized that great art is made everywhere, by all peoples.

African and Diaspora artists draw from every aspect of modern life, plus the rich heritage of African culture. The world is really beginning to appreciate African art.

The name “1-54” is a reference to the 54 countries of Africa, and how strong we are when united as 1.
