Afropunk 2022 is Back With More Style Than an Entire Fashion Week

Afropunk 2022 is a Black music festival in Brooklyn that has gone global. It’s a weekend filled with young energy and lots of AfroFuturism that has become a bit of a social movement of young, Black pride. It’s the African Diaspora coming together – loud and proud.

The festival was inspired by James Spooner’s “Afro-Punk” documentary film (2003) about Black Punk Rockers. The Punk Rock scene was very White and a bit violent. It’s hard to imagine Black kids in the scene, but they did it and made it work. It’s pretty cool really.

Festival attendees are super creative. The kids are very fashionable, and its Brooklyn, so it’s cool. There is more style in two days of Afropunk Brooklyn, than in an entire week of New York Fashion Week. It’s really fun.

Afropunk has been out in the world for a while during the Covid pandemic, but we’re back in Brooklyn.
