Aida opens at the Metropolitan Opera House in Lincoln Center on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at 7:30 pm. It is performed fourteen times with two casts through March 7, 2019. From $25

This is the last season for Sonja Frisell’s production. ‘Aida’ will return in the 2020-2021 season with a brand new production.

Aida

Aida is a grand opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi with an Italian libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni.

It was written for the opening of the Khedivial Opera House in Cairo, Egypt in 1871. It was first performed in the United States at New York City’s Academy of Music in 1873. Aida premiered at the Metropolitan Opera in 1886.

Setting

The opera is set in ancient Egypt during the time of the pharaohs.

This is Sonja Frisell’s production.

There are two casts: one in September and October, and another in January, February and March.

Fall 2018 Cast

Nicola Luisotti (Italian) conducts. He is currently the Associate Director at Madrid’s Teatro Real. He was the music director of the San Franciso Opera from 2009 – 2018.

Russian soprano Anna Netrebko is Aida.
American soprano Tamara Wilson is Aida on October 15 and 18.

Georgian mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili is Amneris.

Latvian tenor Aleksandrs Antonenko is Radamès.

American baritone Quinn Kelsey is Amonasro.

Russian bass Dmitry Belosselskiy is Ramfis.

American bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green is The King.

Ukrainian bass Vitalij Kowaljow is Ramfis in January.
