Ana Moura & Buika

Ana Moura & Buika

Ana Moura & Buika at Carnegie Hall April 26, 2016 at 8pm is two powerful female vocalists singing Portuguese Fado, Spanish Flamenco and Latin standards.

Ana Moura

Ana Moura singing “Fado Loucura” (Fado Madness)
Ana Moura is a young Portuguese Fado star. She is from Santarém, Portugal, just north of Lisbon. Ana works the traditional forms and also blends Pop into Fado. She is a kind of Fado machine. Give Ana Moura a pop melody and she will make it Fado.

Fado is Portuguese folk music. Fado today can be about anything, but traditional Fado is a melancholy music filled with longing. Portugal was a sea power. Portuguese explorations of the African coast started the European Age of Discovery (1400s – 1700s). Fado captures the feeling of waiting for your sailor to return, and not knowing whether he ever will or not.

Buika

Buika singing “Carry your own weight” featuring Jason Mraz
Buika is a Spanish singer originally from Palma de Mallorca, Spain. That’s one of the islands in the Spanish Mediterranean. Her parents are from Equatorial Guinea on the West African coast.

Buika is a great torch singer. She sings in many languages and blends her Spanish and African roots with American Jazz and Soul. It is striking to hear Buika sing to you in African accented English and then hit you with a Flamenco call.

Buika’s “El Ultimo Trago” won a 2010 Latin Grammy for Best Traditional Tropical Album. “La Noche Mas Larga” was nominated for a 2013 Best Latin Jazz Album Grammy.
