Angelina Gualdoni
Angelina Gualdoni is an Italian – American artist. She was born in San Francisco, California in 1975, and now lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
Gualdoni did her BFA in Painting and Installation at Maryland Institute, College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland. She did her MFA in Painting at the University of Illinois at Chicago, School of Art and Design.
Gualdoni is on faculty at the School of the Museum of Fine Art in Boston, Massachusetts.
She has exhibited at galleries across the United States and in Germany.
Gualdoni’s work is in collections at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, and the Saatchi Collection in London, United Kingdom.
Angelina Gualdoni Casa della Nuova Strega
Angelina Gualdoni Casa della Nuova Strega opens with a reception at Asya Geisberg Gallery in Chelsea, Manhattan on April 5, 2018 from 6 – 8 pm. The exhibition is on view Tuesday – Saturday through May 12.
This is Gualdoni’s fourth solo exhibition at Asya Geisberg Gallery.
Strega is Italian for witch. Strega is also an old Italian herbal liqueur associated with witchcraft. The liqueur gets its yellow tint from saffron, a spice made from Crocus flowers, one of the first flowers of Spring. You can find Crocus in Central Park now.
Gualdoni’s style is a blend of textile design and color field painting. She creates depth in two-dimensions by working both sides of her canvases so some images bleed through like ghosts.
The artist references art history by putting patterns painted by early twentieth century female artists on the back sides of her canvases.
The show’s title translates as “House of the New Witch.” We are at an interesting moment when women have a unique opportunity to overturn the dominance of patriarchal society. Nobody is going to do this for us. Like Angelina Gualdoni, we are responsible for creating a house we want to live in.
