Antonio Lopez (1943 – 1987) was a Puerto Rican-born fashion illustrator. He was one of the top illustrators of the 1970s and 1980s. Lopez worked for leading magazines in the U.S. and Europe such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, The New York Times.

Working for Andy Warhol’s Interview put Lopez at the intersection of the art, fashion, and music worlds at that interesting time in New York City when Studio 54 and disco ruled the world.

Antonio Lopez Instamatics

Lopez is well known for his fashion illustrations, but his photography is less so.

Instamatics were inexpensive consumer cameras that Kodak made popular in the 1960s – 1980s. If you are of a certain age, you had one. Today’s disposable cameras are basically a cardboard Instamatic.

Lopez did some formal work with his camera, though he mostly used it to take snapshots of friends. But his friends were stars of the day like Jerry Hall, Jessica Lange, Paloma Picasso, Pat Cleveland, and Tina Chow. Lopez didn’t just take pictures. He helped these fashion icons find their style, so many of the photos are very personal.

Antonio Lopez Instamatics is the first exhibition of Lopez’ photographs from the 1970s. Like most people, Lopez got his photos developed, but only made one set of prints. That makes each print a one-of-a-kind.

The exhibition presents a bit of history. It’s Lopez’ personal story, but also the story of what happened once upon a time in New York City.

Antonio Lopez Instamatics opens with a reception at Danziger Gallery in Manhattan’s Lower East Side on Thursday, March 8, 2018 from 6;30 – 8 pm. The exhibition runs Tuesday – Saturday, through April 28.
