Assassin’s Creed

Assassin’s Creed is a French adaption of the French video game of the same name.

Michael Fassbender stars as Callum Lynch, a criminal on death row brought back to life by Sofia (French actress Marion Cotillard) and her Knights Templar father (Jeremy Irons). To find the lost Apple of Eden, Callum relives the adventures of his Templar-fighting ancestor Aguilar in 15th-century Spain.

The film is basically parkour (jumping buildings) with swordplay set in old Spain. This is one of those movies that a lot of people say they want to see, but is a critical failure.

It is fun to see the imagined 15th-century Spain. It’s a nice place to visit, but you wouldn’t want to live there. It was a rough time of the Reconquista, the voyages of Columbus, and the Spanish Inquisition.

Some of the scenery in parts of the Spanish-speaking world haven’t changed much since.

About the Knights Templar

The Knights Templar were a powerful Catholic paramilitary who fought in the Crusades, built fortified castles, and developed an early form of banking. They fought in a famous white tunic with a red cross.

The Knights Templar fell out of favor when the Holy Land was lost. King Philip IV of France (1268-1314) was so in debt to the Knights that he had many of them burned at the stake and got the Pope to disband the order in 1312.

Empires fall when they spend too much money on fighting. Trying to occupy someone else’s land is rarely a good idea. Their sudden fall from power created a lot of mystery which writers play with today.
