The Month of August
The month of August was named after Augustus Caesar (Octavius) because many of his greatest military victories took place during the month.
Cleopatra’s Needles
Alexandria was an important Greek city at the mouth of the Nile River on the Mediterranean Sea. It was the ancient capital of Egypt.
In ancient times, Alexandria was known for its lighthouse and libraries. During the Roman period, it was the second greatest city in the Roman Empire after Rome itself.
In colonial times, Alexandria had two great obelisks. One was taken to London and the other is in Central Park, behind the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
