Ballet Hispánico Legacy Gala

Ballet Hispánico Legacy Gala Spring 2023 (Rachel Neville/Ballet Hispánico)

This is going to be one of the biggest nights of the year for Hispanic New York City. The starry guest list is filled with people you’d really like to meet. It’s a confluence of Latin dance, Broadway, and music.

Opening night performances include Pedro Ruiz’s “Club Havana,” “Sor Juana” by Michelle Manzanales, and “New Sleep” an iconic ballet pas de deux by William Forsythe in tribute to Tina Ramirez.

The Legacy Gala is hosted by Ana Navarro (The View).

The Plaza Hotel ballroom is pure glamor. If you can, you should dance there once in your New York life. It’s for a good cause and there will be some serious networking. Just go.

Latin is Family

Both The Miranda Family and Ballet Hispánico founder Tina Ramirez devoted themselves to nurturing the next generation as an extended family. That’s the essential Latin character.

Lin-Manuel Miranda was born a genius, but he might not have gotten as far as he has, without his family’s support.

When love flows supreme, it overflows into the community. That’s the gift of both The Mirandas and Tina Ramirez.

The Miranda Family

The most famous member of The Miranda Family is playwright and songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda, “Freestyle Love Supreme,” “In the Heights,” “Hamilton” and many films.

“Hamilton” is the Broadway hit of our generation. It entered popular culture with the idea that many different people from many different places contribute to the culture and prosperity of the United States. One of Lin-Manuel’s legacies is that Broadway and Hollywood are now on the lookout for the next Latin genius.

The entire Miranda Family has done a lot for Hispanic New York for over four decades. They support underserved communities in Upper Manhattan, across NYC, the country, and Puerto Rico. Their strategy combines giving, fundraising and advocacy. This is a family that New York listens to, and a family that is an example for us all.

The Legacy of Tina Ramirez

National Medal of Arts winner Tina Ramirez (1929-2022) was a Latina of many accomplishments. But her most important legacy is hope.

She demonstrated that regardless of your heritage, if your heart is in the right place, you really work at it, and never give up, you can make dreams come true.

New York City is one of the best places in the world to do this, and Ballet Hispánico is one of the best places in the Latin world to do this.
