Bebe was best new artist in 2005

Bebe won the 2005 Latin Grammy for “Best New Artist” with her self-titled debut album. It speaks to a lot of women’s issues.

Malo, about a wife or girlfriend beater was nominated for “Record of the Year” and “Song of the Year.” It switches between Flamenco and Rock as she goes soft and then rises up in anger at the abuse.

The other big song off the album was Ella (She). It’s a song about being independent.

Siempre me quedara

This song from her album Bebe is a hit among Tango Nuevo dancers. They used to play it as the closing song at 4 or 5 in the morning at the La Viruta milonga in Buenos Aires. The dancers would hold each other a just a little tighter during this song.

English-speakers think it’s so passionate that it must be a beautiful love song. It is, but Bebe is singing to the baby she aborted. You can hear hospital pumps in the background rhythms.

If you have ever gone through this, you can’t help but remember your own child. Siempre me quedara.

Bebe’s Y. was nominated for a Grammy Award

Bebe generated more mainstream interest in 2010 when Y. was nominated for a Grammy for “Best Latin Rock, Urban or Alternative Album.” It was also nominated for Latin Grammys for “Album of the Year” and “Best Female Pop Vocal Album.”

Cambio de Piel

Bebe keeps on creating. Her album Cambio de Piel (Change of skin) was nominated in 2016 for a “Best Alternative Music Album” Latin Grammy.

She is now a mom and less rebellious, though no less sincere or opinionated. Strong woman.
