About Bill Charlap

Once you have heard Bill Charlap play, you will never forget it. Maybe it’s because he’s a New Yorker. Maybe it’s because he comes from a musical family.

Charlap was born in New York City in 1966. His mother was a singer. His father was a Broadway composer. Bill is a distant cousin of Jazz pianist Dick Hyman who directed Jazz in July for years.

Charlap is better known in Japan than he is in the states. He was twice nominated for Grammys with “Somewhere” featuring the music of Leonard Bernstein, and “The Bill Charlap Trio, Live at the Village Vanguard.”

Charlap won a 2016 Grammy Award for ‘Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album” for “The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern” with Tony Bennett.
