Bill de Blasio is the 109th mayor of New York City. He took office on January 1, 2014 and is running for a second term on November 7, 2017.
Bill de Blasio is Italian-American
Warren Wilhelm Jr. was born in Manhattan in 1961. De Blasio is Italian on his mother’s side. His father came home unwell from World War II so De Blasio was raised by his mother’s family. Warren changed his name to reflect his family upbringing. His identity is Italian-American-New Yorker.
De Blasio didn’t come from privilege. He largely created himself so he understands the struggles that many people go through to survive in our city.
Activist and poet Chirlane McCray married De Blasio in 1994. They have two children.
De Blasio famously warned his son about the perils of being a person of color in our country. He was criticized for going public about that, but many of us have had to have the same talk with our own children.
First Lady McCray often helps out at events. We like Bill and we like Chirlane even more. They are a family very much like us.
Bill De Blasio is a Good Campaigner
De Blasio got his start in politics working on Mayor David Dinkins’ campaign in 1989.
De Blasio served as campaign manager for popular U.S. Representative Charles Rangel and later for Hillary Clinton’s U.S. Senate bid.
In 2001, De Blasio was voted into the New York City Council of District 39 which includes Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, Columbia Waterfront, Gowanus, Park Slope, Windsor Terrace, Borough Park, and Kensington.
He was New York City Public Advocate from 2010 – 2013.
Bill De Blasio as Mayor
Bill de Blasio became New York City Mayor in 2014. Recognizing that lack of education is a key factor in holding people back, De Blasio delivered on his main campaign promise of universal pre-kindergarten for New York City students.
After his first term, employment is up and unemployment is down. Earnings are up and poverty is down. School test scores are up. Crime remains down. De Blasio is still working on homelessness and affordable housing.
In a second term, De Blasio would like to offer universal pre-pre-kindergarten to New York City 3-year olds.
