Joseph Cornell was a bit of a hermit New Yorker, but he created the most exquisite boxed assemblages. Cornell is American, but one of his series was inspired by Spanish artist Juan Gris.

Cornell’s boxes are fabulous. They are filled with the seemingly random magic energy of New York City streets.

The exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art reunites the painting that struck Cornell, the Gris Cubist masterpiece The Man at the Café, with almost a dozen of the eighteen Cornell boxes that were inspired by Gris.

The exhibition is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan’s Upper East Side from January 23 – April 15, 2018.
