DUMBO Archway Shows

Opening night features Luan Barbosa’s Roda de Samba, Batalá NY, and DJ Greg Caz with visual art by Alice Quaresma on Friday, July 9, 2021 at 6pm. From $17

UNESCO declared Samba de Roda as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2005. It is a form of Afro-Brazilian festival music from Bahia that mixes African and Portuguese traditions. The music is used for both Afro-Brazilian and Catholic religious ceremonies, but is also a popular tradition. Samba de Roda was carried to Rio de Janeiro by migrants where it became one of the foundations of the urban samba that defines modern Brazilian cultural identity.

Batalá NY is one of NYC’s all-woman samba drum lines. It mixes samba with reggae and has grown into a global arts project with an alliance of some 30 drum bands around the world. This is today’s youth culture. We don’t fight. We drum, sing and dance. batalanewyork.love

DJ Caz is a popular New York Brazilian samba DJ. Once the music starts, you can’t stop dancing.

Alice Quaresma is a Brooklyn Brazilian who does mixed media photography. She is doing projections on the Archway curated by Gisela Gueiros. Quaresma is a Pratt Institute MFA who won the Aperture Foundation Summer Open Prize in 2019. alicequaresma.com Instagram @alicequaresma

The second show features Forrobodó, and Lívia Nestrovski & Fred Ferreira with visual art by Chiara Banfi on Saturday, July 10, 2021 at 6pm. From $17

Forrobodó is a Brazilian New York band with Fabiana Masili, Itaiguara Brandão, Felipe Hostins and Gil Oliveira. Forro is really fun Brazilian country music and dance. The steps are like bachata, but danced with the legs intertwined. The band’s name refers to a wild dance party. It’s also a Carioca (Rio de Janeiro) theatrical tradition where common people make fun of fancy rich people. There’s even a Forrobodó television show. It’s funny how poor people want to be rich people, and rich people want to have fun like poor people. It’s better when we just get together. There’s enough money and fun for everyone.

Lívia Nestrovski & Fred Ferreira are singer and guitarist duo from Rio de Janeiro. Facebook @LiviaNestrovskiEFredFerreira

Chiara Banfi is a artist and Google Scholar from São Paulo who lives and works in Rio. She will be projecting images on the Archway walls curated by Gisela Gueiros. chiarobanfi.com Instagram @chiarabanfi_
