River Plate History

Argentines are famous for their passion for soccer. Club Atlético River Plate is the most successful soccer club in Argentina. They have won the Argentine Primera División (the top Argentine league) title a record 36 times and the Copa Libertadores (the top South American league) twice.

River Plate was founded in 1901 near La Boca, the neighborhood at the mouth of the Riachuelo River that was the old commercial center of Buenos Aires. When the team turned professional in the 1930s, the club spent a fortune on players earning them the nickname Los Millionarios.

River Plate developed a strong rivalry with another team in La Boca, the Boca Juniors. River Plate vs Boca Juniors is El Superclásico, one of world’s great derbies (rivalries). The two teams are the most popular in Argentina. When this match is on, all Argentina stops working to join the party.

When the Argentine national stadium Estadio Monumental Antonio Vespucio Liberti (El Monumental) opened in 1938, River Plate moved there. El Monumental is in Nuñez, a rich neighborhood in Buenos Aires. This strengthened the club’s rivalry with the Boca Juniors. In Argentina, River Plate is the team of the elite and the Boca Juniors are the club of the working class.

During the 1940s, River Plate dominated Argentine soccer. An Argentine player’s strike in 1948 led many of the team’s top players to play for the Millonarios in Bogotá, Colombia, the most successful Colombian club.

In 2011, River Plate was relegated to the Primera B Nacional division for the first time in its history. They responded by winning the division in 2012 to return to the Primera División in 2013. Winning the Primera Division Torneo Final (second half of the Argentine season) in May 2014 marks a tremendous comeback for Argentina’s top club.
