Christie’s Latin American Art auctions in May and November end the auction season.
Christie’s Fall 2019 Latin American Art auction
The auction exhibition goes on view Saturday, November 16 for auction on Wednesday and Thursday, November 20-21, 2019 at Christie’s showroom in Rockefeller Center, NYC. FREE
The sale is led by two rare works by Frida Kahlo. La canasta con flores (The Flower Basket), 1941 shows her immense drawing talent, but lacks the fire of her more introspective work. Portrait of a Lady in White (circa 1929) is similar. There is not much Kahlo in the market. Both pieces are estimated to sell for $3,000,000 to $5,000,000 each.
Tablao flamenco is a fine Fernando Botero painting.
Francisco Toledo’s El elefante (1978) is estimated at $800,000 to $1,200,000.
Diego Rivera’s Vendedora de flores en Tehuantepec from 1935 is estimated at $300,000 to $500,000. If you live in the Latin world, you will recognize the image of a street flower vendor.
Rufino Tamayo’s early The Family (1925) is estimated at $600,000 to $800,000. In this period, he was creating art to promote Mexican identity.
There are also works by Remedios Varo, Guillermo Kuitca, Claudio Bravo, Alfredo Volpi, Roberto Matta, Rómulo Macció, Francisco Zúñiga, Jesús Rafael Soto, Gego, Julio Galán and Yoan Capote.
