Cocote is Nelson Carlo de los Santos Arias’ 2017 Dominican film about Alberto, an evangelical gardener who returns to his hometown for his father’s funeral after his dad is murdered by a local thug.
The funeral is a mixture of Catholic and West African traditions, both of which challenge Alberto’s evangelical beliefs. Plus the family wants vengeance. Soon Alberto realizes that the family called him home to be the avenger. Now what?

Cocote won “Best Film” at the 2017 Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland.
It won a “Special Jury Award” at the 2017 Lisbon and Estoril Film Festival; and won “Best Latin-American Film” and “FEISAL” awards at the 2017 Mar del Plata Film Festival in Argentina.
The film was also nominated for awards at the 2017 Hamburg Film Festival, 2018 Istanbul International Film Festival, 2018 Lucca Film Festival, and the San Sebastián International Film Festival.
Cocote in New York City
Cocote had its New York City premiere at the 2018 New Directors New Films festival at Film Society of Lincoln Center and MoMA Film in April 2018.
Cocote gets its theatrical release at IFC Center in the West Village on Friday, August 3, 2018.
