Colossal

Anne Hathaway in Nacho Vigalondo's "Colossal"

The Spanish writer/director Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes, Open Windows, The ABCs of Death) makes fun of the creepy side of romance with a riveting Kaiju monster twist.

Kaiju are giant monsters that destroy cities. Godzilla is the most famous Kaiju. But Colossal really isn’t a kaiju movie.

The romantic tussle between Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis hold the film together. Sci-fi monster fans will still enjoy the concept cinematography even though it’s mostly seen through tv screens.

Colossal opens Friday, April 7, 2017.

About Colossal

Gloria (Anne Hathaway) is an out-of-control young loser in New York on a downward slide who gets dumped by her boyfriend Tim (Dan Stevens). She moves back home to her parent’s small town and gets a job in her friend Oscar’s (Jason Sudeikis) bar. A kaiju monster starts destroying Seoul and Gloria realizes that she somehow controls the monster like a giant puppet.

Seeing potential, Oscar starts using Gloria’s monster relationship to manipulate and control her. That’s the creepy core of the movie. Gloria has to figure out why all this is happening and stop the damage by taking control of herself and her life.

Colossal premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 9, 2016. It went on to Sundance. It’s being released by Neon, Tom Quinn & Tim League’s new distribution company.
