Copa América 2021
This is the CONMEBOL South American soccer championship. It is the longest running international soccer tournament.
This year’s tournament created controversy by cancelling Argentina/Colombia co-hosting at the last minute because of national protests in Colombia and COVID-19 outbreaks in both countries. It’s winter in South America which is the worst time for the pandemic.
It ended up being played in Brazil in Cuiabá, Goiánia, Brasilia and Rio de Janeiro.
The tournament usually invites several outside teams, but did not this season because of the pandemic.
The CONMEBOL North Zone includes Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela.
The CONMEBOL South Zone includes Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay.
Argentina vs Brazil
Argentina has won fourteen of the tournaments and Brazil has won nine. Brazil won the last tournament in 2019. Argentina last won it in 1993.
Brazil is currently ranked #3 in the world. Argentina is ranked #8. Going into the game, Brazil looked a little stronger at Copa América, but we will see. Messi was hot in the semi final with a goal and two assists. The bettors are predicting a Brazil win.
The Maracaña is one of the world’s iconic soccer stadiums. It’s always great to watch soccer there.
Team Argentina
In the Group Stage, after tying Chile, Argentina found its footing and defeated Uruguay, Paraguay and Bolivia. The team beat Ecuador 3-0 in the Quarter Finals, and tied Colombia in the Semi Finals, but won the penalty kick shootout.
Team Brazil
Brazil had sort of a reverse Group Stage, beating Venezuela, Peru and Colombia before tying Ecuador. Brazil put away Chile in the Quarter Finals and Peru in the Semi Finals.
It’s a great soccer weekend. The Euro 2020 Final is Sunday.
