Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros
The Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros is the most important private collection of contemporary Latin American art.
The Venezuelan-born Ms. Cisneros began collecting Latin American art in the 1970s when nobody else was looking. Today, you cannot buy the quality of work that she collected. It is not for sale or unaffordable.
Ms. Cisneros did not set out to become a collector. She just loved the art. At some point in the journey she realized what she had, and transformed herself into the lead curator and archivist of the collection she had assembled.
Ms. Cisneros and her family have been making major gifts to important institutions like MoMA, the Museum of Modern Art. The Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Research Institute at MoMA makes the museum the world’s premiere center of Latin American art.

Copy, Translate, Repeat: Contemporary Art from the Colección Cisneros
The exhibition focuses on the way artists use art history for inspiration, yet create something new. It also embraces the theme of appropriation. What do we copy from the central streams of the art world? How do we translate those ideas into something uniquely our own? What then?

The exhibition offers both well known artists who are in the collections of major American institutions, and some artists who are being shown in the United States for the first time.

- Leandro Katz (Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1938)
- Jorge Macchi (Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1963)
- Leticia Obeid (Buenos Aires Argentina, 1975)
- Dario Robleto (San Antonio, Texas, 1972)
- José Antonio Suárez Londoño (Medellín, Colombia, 1955)
- Christian Vinck (Maracaibo, Venezuela, 1978)
This is the first showing of such a large part of the Cisneros Collection in the United States. The exhibition is produced in partnership with the Hunter College art programs. It is training for the next generation of curators. Bravo!
The exhibition is curated by Professor Harper Montgomery with Hunter MA and MFA Students enrolled in the Advanced Curatorial Certificate.
Copy, Translate, Repeat: Contemporary Art from the Colección Cisneros opens with a reception at Hunter College’s 205 Hudson Gallery in Tribeca, Manhattan on Thursday, February 8 from 6 – 8 pm. Wednesday – Sunday, through April 1, 2018.
