Dance Theatre of Harlem Bids Farewell to Artistic Director Virginia Johnson at New York City Center

Dance Theatre of Harlem’s 2022 Season at New York City Center is the company’s farewell to Artistic Director Virginia Johnson (Pointe Magazine). She was picked by company co-founder Arthur Mitchell to relaunch the company in 2009. She was going to retire, but stayed on to guide the company through the pandemic.

Resident Choreographer Robert Garland becomes Artistic Director on July 1, 2023.

William Forsythe’s “Blake Works IV” is the latest iteration of the choreographer’s continual evolution. He is best known for his work with the Ballet Frankfurt and his own Forsythe Company (now Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company). @william_forsythe_

Tiffany Rea-Fisher’s “The Barre Project” is a new ballet set to an original score by New York DJ and composer Erica Blunt (Twelve45). It is inspired by Classical and Jazz musician and civil rights activist Hazel Scott. Rea-Fisher is the Executive Artistic Director of EMERGE125, a National Dance Project Award winner, 2021 & 2022 Toulmin Fellow, and John Brown Spirit award winner. She teaches Ballet at NYU and curates the wonderful Bryant Park Dance Summer Series. @treafisher @twelve45_

The company bids farewell to Artistic Director Virginia Johnson with her favorite Balanchine ballet, “Allegro Brillante.” The ballet’s title means “Brilliant Joy” which is the most concise description of Dance Theatre of Harlem. @virginia_johnsondth
