El Museo del Barrio is New York’s Puerto Rican and Latin American Art Museum

El Museo del Barrio in “El Barrio” East Harlem, is New York City’s Puerto Rican and Latin American art museum.

Founded by New York Puerto Ricans, El Museo now represents all Latins of the Americas. Because it’s a Latin museum, it’s both a museum and a community center.

You get a lot more out of your visit if you take one of the free exhibition tours.

The El Museo Three Kings Day Parade is one of the highlights of New York’s holiday season.

About El Museo

El Museo del Barrio was founded in 1969 by New York City’s Puerto Rican community. The museum has a strong permanent collection of Indigenous Taíno and Puerto Rican art. It produces some world-class exhibitions.

The Puerto Rican community worries that the museum is no longer led by Puerto Ricans and has gone beyond Puerto Rican culture. Yet Puerto Rico itself is a mix of many cultures. Let’s be proud of what we have accomplished and that we are leading the way for other Latin communities in New York and across the United States.
