Escalandrum

This is Piazzolla playing Piazzolla, but you never heard Piazzolla like this. Daniel takes his grandfather’s “Tango Nuevo” in an entirely new direction going further into the jazz that was played constantly in his father’s and grandfather’s house. Astor created “Tango Jazz.” Daniel is creating “Jazz Tango.”

Ute Lemper

Ximena Ojeda, New York Latin Culture Director said, “Singing ‘Maria de Buenos Aires’ Ute connected instantly with the passion of the heroine. Not everybody can understand Latin culture, but Ute gets it. Impressive!”

Paquito D’Rivera and Daniel “Pipi” Piazzolla

When Paquito played “Oblivion” he became the song. When he finished, there were many teary eyes in the audience. Paquito touched us all in the warmest way. When asked how it felt playing with these young men, Paquito answered, “They are so talented and have so much love for this music that it made me happy to play with them. It made me play better.”

Daniel “Pipi” Piazzolla

Assistant Secretary of State, Jose Fernandez, a Cuban-American said, “This music is in my own DNA and the City’s as well. Escalandrum at Birdland is an example of outstanding Latin culture that comes to New York and adds one more facet to the unity of cultures that we have here.”

This is not your father’s Piazzolla. Daniel and his band are creating something altogether new. You have one more chance to enjoy this outstanding Jazz band, 3pm today at Queens College.
