San Gennaro

San Gennaro in Italian is Saint Januarius I (3rd century) in English. He was the Bishop of Benevento, an Italian town 31 miles inland from Naples.

San Gennaro is famous for the miracle by which a holy relic of his dried blood kept in Naples Cathedral turns to liquid. That may sound impossible, but Neapolitans swear by it. Faithful visit the cathedral to witness the miracle on September 19, December 16, and the first Sunday in May.

The Feast of San Gennaro on September 19th commemorates his death.

91st Feast of San Gennaro 2017

The Feast of San Gennaro is celebrated with a street fair in New York City’s Little Italy from September 14 – 24, 2017 and a procession of the Statue of San Gennaro on September 19, 2017 at 6pm.

The first Feast of San Gennaro in Little Italy started as a one-day religious commemoration on Mulberry Street in 1926.

It’s basically an Italian street fair. But on September 19th, the statue of the saint is paraded through the streets. Faithful donate money to bring good fortune in the coming year.

11:30am – 11pm (midnight on Fridays and Saturdays)

The Feast of San Gennaro Started in 1926

It all started when immigrants from Naples gathered in September 1926 for the traditional Naples celebration of Saint Januarius.
