The Story of Ferdinand

The Story of Ferdinand is a children’s book about a bull who would rather smell the flowers than fight. It was written in 1936 by Munro Leaf and illustrated by Robert Lawson.

The book is a children’s classic. In 1938, Life magazine called it “the greatest juvenile classic since Winnie the Pooh.” Political interpretations made the story controversial in some countries. It was even banned in Spain until after Franco’s death.

Spanish-speakers of a certain age grew up with El Cuento de Ferdinando.
