Gloria Trevi, the Mexican Madonna, Plays Latin Rock at Radio City Music Hall

Gloria Trevi was Mexico’s biggest rock star in the 1990s. She was named the “Mexican Madonna” by the press for her naughty image and the taboo topics in her songs. It all seems tame now, but at the time, Trevi’s bad girl image was just as shocking as Madonna’s, and even more so because the Latin world is much more conservative.

Gloria de los Ángeles Treviño Ruiz was born in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico on February 15, 1969.

As a teenager, she ran away from home to Mexico City to pursue a career in entertainment. There she met Sergio Andrade who would become her manager and husband.

In 1985 Trevi sang briefly with girl-group Boquitas Pintadas.

Her first solo album “Qué Hago Aqui?” (1989) produced her first #1 hit “Dr. Psiquiatra.” Trevi appeared in many racy pin-up calendars which further spread her fame. She also sang about women’s issues that were taboo at the time in Mexico. Mexican women never behaved like that before Gloria Trevi.

Madonna was controversial here in the U.S. Imagine that character in the more conservative Mexican culture. Like Madonna, Trevi’s naughty persona pushed the boundaries of what was socially acceptable. It also made fans love her.

Trevi opened doors for female Mexican artists to follow. Who knows, maybe Madonna is the American Gloria Trevi.

Trevi got in some trouble in 1999, but bounced back with “Cómo Nace el Universo”  (2004) and continues to make hit albums and do television work.
