The 13th Havana Biennial art fair is in Havana, Cuba from April 12 – May 12, 2019.

Havana Biennial

This is Cuba’s biggest art event. The 2017 edition was put on hold by Hurricane Irma, but the Biennial is back.

This year’s theme is “Construction of the Possible.” This is a natural Cuban talent anyway because we often have to just make do with whatever is at hand.

Trust me, we do just fine, but do better when you come to visit us. A major goal of the Biennial team is to foster interaction between visitors, artists, curators and the Cuban people.

In addition to Cuban artists, you can expect to see art from other Latin countries including Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, France, Mexico, Peru, Portugal and Spain.

The Cuban government supports the Biennial. Government organizations, including the National Council of Plastic Arts and the Contemporary Art Center Wifredo Lam, have committed to turning Havana into a cultural corridor. This is a great time to go.

Havana is celebrating its 500th Anniversary. The best thing you can do to help the Cuban people is go and spend money.

Visiting the Havana Biennial

Our U.S. government is unstable so you never know what to expect. [Our own fears have turned us into a Latin country.] But you can travel to Cuba. Airlines and tour operators will give you a tourist visa when you board.

The easiest way to travel to Cuba is with a tour group. The American Friends of the Ludwig Foundation of Cuba (producers of the Havana Film Festival New York) are leading Biennial tours.

The Biennial is also reaching outside Havana for the first time into Matanzas, Cienfuegos, Cancti Spíritus and Camagüey.

Yes, it’s a bit tough to get information out of Cuba. Check biennialhavana.org

Just go. It’s the Latin world where nothing works quite right, but together we make it all right. Just go. Together, we’ll figure it out.
